What a designer notices first is how seamless it looks. The credenza's stone doors open, and the wordmark floats clear of the oak.
A jewellery boutique at Square One in Mississauga, in conjunction with Clarisa Llaneza Studio, who also drew the Yorkdale store. The room is an oak back wall, three travertine plinths, and a travertine credenza, which puts every joint in plain sight under retail lighting. There is nothing on these surfaces for a shortcut to hide behind.
We built the oak panelling, the three plinths, and the credenza. On the credenza, we made the millwork and worked closely with the stone fabricators to complete their scope, so the stone fronts open like any cabinet door.
Wall
The back wall is panelled in reconstituted white oak veneer, a manufactured veneer with a uniform grain, so the wall reads as one surface from panel to panel. The wordmark is mounted on standoffs and floats above the veneer face, far enough off it that the letters cast their own shadow on the oak.
Credenza
The credenza is faced in travertine, and its three stone doors are working doors with hidden storage behind them. Closed, it reads as a piece of stone set into the plaster niche, not as a cabinet.
Fit
The hard part was the timeline. What we were building in the shop had to merge with the site on a tight schedule, and none of that shows in the finished room.
