A multi-room millwork package in custom-laid, sequenced, flat-cut white oak, the whole kitchen veneered from one tree. A monolithic blackened steel hood stands proud of the kitchen cabinetry, and in the living room evenly spaced floating shelves frame a book-matched stone chimney breast.

Oak, steel, stone, and glass, room after room. The hard part was bringing them together seamlessly.
A house on McMaster Avenue in Toronto, in conjunction with Kim Lambert Design, photographed by Lauren Miller. We built the millwork in the kitchen, bar, dining room, living room, entry, speakeasy, and bath, from the tall oven wall and the island to a slat screen, a pivot door, and two vanities.
The scale and the detail were the hard part. Oak, blackened steel, stone, smoked glass, and mirror had to meet without a flaw, and the island and hearth stone came from other trades, so our millwork was built in close coordination with theirs. What ties the rooms together is consistency: one finish and one palette across every piece of millwork.
Grain
Every oak face on the millwork is custom-laid, sequenced, flat-cut white oak. In the kitchen, the veneer for the whole room comes from one tree, so the grain runs consistently across the faces, from a tall door to the drawer fronts under the cooktop. Carried room to room, the same cut and sequencing hold the finish and the palette consistent across all of the millwork.

Hood
The range hood is a monolithic box wrapped in patinated, blackened steel, and it is the featured piece in the kitchen. Rather than sinking into the cabinetry line, it stands proud of the oak uppers on either side. Below it, the island millwork is ours, topped in stone from the contractor's stone supplier.

Hearth
In the living room the millwork frames stone. The base cabinets and floating shelves on either side of the chimney breast are evenly spaced and aligned, so they complement its book-matched stone face. We built the units and the shelves in close coordination with the stone fabricator and the contractors.
